Buy Holiday Gifts and Support Aids Orphans in Mozambique
These beautiful handcrafted collages are painted by AIDs orphans in Chimoio, Mozambique. Art is only one of the skills taught to these children with the idea of providing the children skills that will lead to self sufficiency and a meaningful life. The proceeds of the sales go to building a solar oven and small kitchen for the Orphanage. The material is a high quality “Calico” fabric and the paint is an acrylic mixed with a textile medium which creates durable fabric paint. The dimensions are 26.5” by 17”. About AOSCI, www.aosci.org AIDS Orphans Skills Center International was started with $150.00 and a one way ticket to the U.S. to set up as an NGO in 2005 and then to register in Mozambique, where it is known as TIOS - which is the Portuguese acronym for International Training for the orphans and their survival. After one and a half years, we now have three orphan facilities including our latest Creativity Center in order to Support Orphans where we are teaching orphans to paint fabric and also to create anatomical dolls to teach better HIV/AIDS education. Our orphans are from 4 - 20 years old, help the older ones who are supporting younger siblings with skills training so we can make an effect for the whole family through training the oldest sibling. These collages are usually worked on by three or four orphans - at the center, at home or even in rural classes. The less experienced children do the tracing and first coat of paint - the larger areas. Then the more experienced painters do the details and the blending. We typically have classes for them for 7 - 8- weeks to get a certificate for their skill level before they move on to the next thing. As secondary school enrollment is less than 10%, having a trade skill is imperative. The reason we teach fabric painting and crafts is to make safety posters for survival skills training for children in more rural areas. Thank you for your interest and support.
